No, I wasn’t the camp that BioWare needed 50 different endings for every permutation of choices players made across 200 hours of three games, but the simplistic choice seemed overly reductive, which is why I wanted to believe in the more elaborate Indoctrination Theory, that this “bad ending” was really just a trick by the Reapers to indoctrinate Shepard, and the only correct answer was to destroy them. I simply don’t think the original endings worked at all. And fundamentally, the endings of the game never actually changed. Citadel was just a missing moment that should have been there in the first place. And in Mass Effect’s case, it wasn’t even a ret-con. But I’ve seen so many games succeed because they absorb feedback and work with fans to tell their stories. For many critics, this was the “death of art” where complaining could yield to story changes. The game was made better with the altered ending and the Citadel DLC, and represents a collaborative process that is a lot more common in gaming nowadays. I also think the ending is talked up too much over the rest of Mass Effect 3, which was an incredible game before that point. The protests were really obnoxious and occasionally unhinged, and no one at BioWare deserved the abuse they got for the ending. Looking back on it now, it was murky territory. That would be the now famous Citadel DLC, which takes place before the final mission and is more or less just a giant party where you get to talk extensively with almost every character in the series, getting some sense of closure with beloved members of your crew before you head into the breach, with special attention given to love interests.Ĭovering this controversy was one of the first “major” stories I got any attention for, given that I was siding with the idea that yes, the ending should be changed and improved, over most of the press which was calling gamers “entitled’ for wanting a different ending. First, they updated the game to flesh out the ending a bit more with extended cutscenes and a few other tweaks. The story will need to choose a canon ending of Mass Effect 3 to continue from - making it the Destroy ending could allow BioWare to use some of these original ideas from Karpyshyn.Eventually, BioWare tried to appease fans. Currently, BioWare is developing a true sequel to the original trilogy, as opposed to the oft-overlooked Mass Effect: Andromeda. The complete destruction of the Mass Relays would create a drastically different status quo for the Mass Effect universe for subsequent games in the series. While this isn’t as drastic as destroying the entire Relay Network, Arrival clearly took some inspiration from the original ending idea Karpyshyn was working on. To delay the Reapers Shepard resorts to smashing an asteroid into a Mass Relay, destroying it and catching the Reapers in deep space. The story follows Shepard on a mission to prevent an imminent invasion of Reapers with the help of a deep cover agent. The Arrival DLC acted as a prologue to the events of Mass Effect 3. However, as one Reddit commenter points out, the idea of luring Reapers through the Mass Relay and detonating the network on purpose bears a lot of resemblance to Mass Effect 2’s Arrival DLC.Ī new entry in the series is in the works and looks to pick up the story of the original trilogy. The Destroy ending of Mass Effect 3 also destroys the Mass Relays, much like this original idea from Karpyshyn. However, the idea of the Mass Effect relays being destroyed did make its way into the series. The journey from this idea to the endings players saw in the final game seems unclear. like what we would do in the next series of games.” But we still had to figure out a lot of the details, and there were some issues with that option. but also destroying/damaging the relays and isolating every galactic community from the others. This was the initial idea the team had: “It involved luring the Reapers through the Mass Relays then detonating the entire network to wipe them out. When asked how he would have ended the Mass Effect series, Karpyshyn shared that he was part of early planning for the end of the series. A fourth ending was added in the Extended Cut DLC that allowed players to refuse any of these options and let the Reapers wipe out organic life, restarting the cycle of evolution that has occurred numerous times in the galaxy. In Synthesis (Green) Shepard merges all organic and synthetic life in the galaxy, making the reapers' mission irrelevant. Control (Blue) has Shepard merge with the reapers, now controlling them Shepard uses them to rebuild the galaxy. Destroy (Red) sees Shepard destroying all the reapers, as well as all synthetic life in the galaxy. When Mass Effect 3 was released in 2012 players were met with three different endings. The original endings didn’t offer much choice for players. "What cracked (Y/N)?" She looked like she was on the verge of freaking out. "How'd that happen?" Pearl gave her a serious look then turned back to me. "Dear heavens (Y/N)! What happened how'd you get out?" I hear Amethyst jump in. "Pearl, something cracked," I say in my childish voice. I grabbed my lower back in pain and I felt something crack. I didn't say anything but I saw Pearl come down and gasp very loudly. My hand slipped and I fell onto the ground hitting my back and then my head. I fell out of my bubble and that's when I climbed up the vines and saw that instead of Rose, it was a boy. The now tallest Lady, Garnet, was there and so was Amethyst but she looked prettier. I woke up now 5 and Pearl was there but Rose wasn't there to wake me up. "She meant Rainbow Quartz," Rose's eyes sparkled. "You know where your mother is?" Pearl asked and I nodded pointing and both of them with two fingers and then putting my fingers together. They looked at each other without knowing that I meant the other lady. But your taking care of her," "but." I spoke and they both looked at me immediately. "Please Pearl? She has no one to go to," Rose looked at Pearl and then Pearl looked at me. "We can't keep her Rose!" The other one spoke. I'm sorry about that," her voice was kind. They both looked at me and the one with the pink curls came over to me. Then I saw a tall woman with long pink curls and another one still tall but not as tall with short pointed hair. It looked like she was arguing with herself through her eyes after a while until she split in half. I hesitated to take it but slowly I touched her finger and held on to it and she helped me out of the hole in the wall. She didn't say anything but extended her one of her two hands out to me. I heard her turning back and before I could crawl into the shadows she bent down and looked at me. I tried to hold it in but with no room to let it pass it came out like a kittens Mew. I saw her feet walking away and I stayed put until I had to sneeze. I hid where no one could find me in a little hole in a building wall that I dug out to look natural. The pretty lady saw me and I backed away and ran into my normal alleyway that I'd lived in my whole life. He would by things from the dock and give it to me. I would always see kids holding there hands and things but I've never gotten to actually touch anyone's hand. Knowing that a four year old like me, alone and homeless, wouldn't be able to know such joy with mommy's and Daddy's. She practically glowed with beauty and I stared in awe. The beholder appears in the revised Monster Manual for the 3.5 edition (2003). Beholder variants appear in Monstrous Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn (2001). The third edition of Dungeons & Dragons included the Beholder in the Monster Manual (2000) with the expanded monster statistics of this release. The Beholder's xenophobia towards other subraces of Beholders was added after Jim Holloway submitted multiple designs for the Beholder's spelljamming ship and Jeff Grubb decided to keep them all and used xenophobia to explain the differences in design style. Jeff Grubb cites Keith Parkinson's artwork as the inspiration for the beholder-kin created for the Spelljammer campaign setting. īased on Tom Wham's depiction in the first edition Monster Manual, TSR artist Keith Parkinson characterized its popular appearance with plate-like armored scales and arthropod-like eyestalks. I, Tyrant expands the information on beholders through details of the race's history, religion, culture, settlements and psychology, and more. The book I, Tyrant (1996), and the Monstrous Arcana module series that accompanies it, develops the beholder further. It also appeared in the Monstrous Compendium Volume One (1989), and is reprinted in the Monstrous Manual (1993). Beholders feature prominently in the Spelljammer setting, and a number of variants and related creatures are introduced in the Spelljammer: AD&D Adventures in Space campaign set, in the Lorebook of the Void booklet (1989). Second edition supplements to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, especially those of the Spelljammer campaign setting, added further details about these classic creatures' societies and culture. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989–1999) Moore authored "The Ecology of the Beholder", which featured in Dragon #76 (August 1983). With the release of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition, the beholder appeared in the first edition Monster Manual (1977), where it is described as a hateful, aggressive, avaricious spherical monster that is most frequently found underground. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977–1988) In 1991, it appeared in the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia. The beholder later appears in the Companion Rules set, in the Dungeon Masters Companion: Book Two (1984). It is described as a "Sphere of Many Eyes" or "Eye Tyrant", a levitating globe with ten magical eye stalks. The beholder was introduced with the first Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Greyhawk (1975), and is depicted on its cover (as shown in the section below). Rob Kuntz's brother Terry Kuntz created the Beholder, and Gary Gygax detailed it for publication. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons monsters, the beholder is an original creation for D&D, as it is not based on a creature from mythology or other fiction. Beholders have been used on the cover of different Dungeons & Dragons handbooks, including the fifth edition Monster Manual. Beholders are one of the few classic Dungeons & Dragons monsters that Wizards of the Coast claims as Product Identity and as such was not released under its Open Game License. The beholder is among the Dungeons & Dragons monsters that have appeared in every edition of the game since 1975. It is depicted as a floating orb of flesh with a large mouth, single central eye, and many smaller eyestalks on top with powerful magical abilities. The beholder is a fictional monster in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. Tom Wham's illustration of a beholder from the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, 1977 By the time the train was gone, so was the thief.įifteen minutes later, he was coasting south along Sheridan Road. Metra rumbling into the station three blocks away. There were no sirens or alarms - only the sound of the 11:26 a.m. It had been less than three minutes since he exited the bank. He climbed onto the bike, clicked into the pedals, and began to ride leisurely. Not 60 seconds later, he emerged, carrying an aluminum bicycle on one shoulder and a messenger bag over the other and wearing a red, white, and blue spandex bodysuit, a silver helmet, sunglasses with yellow lenses, and a pair of cycling shoes. And so did the man, descending into a parking garage. Returning a stiff nod, the officer kept rolling. As the ATV approached, the robber smiled and waved hello, as would anyone who had not just knocked over a bank. Squeezing the shopping bag, he settled into a relaxed gait. Suddenly the man spotted a police officer riding a four-wheel ATV. The street was empty: no cars, no pedestrians. “Thank you,” he said before walking out the front door. While the teller anxiously transferred bundles of cash, the man held his hands at his heart, gently pressing his palms together as if he were about to whisper, Namaste. “Nice and easy,” he said coolly, handing over a white plastic shopping bag from Sports Authority. The man, who would later be described to the police as a slender, clean-shaven white man in his 20s wearing a light blue oxford shirt, returned the note card to his pocket. She stared at the words handwritten in black marker: “THIS IS A ROBBERY. Instead, he presented her with a 3-by-5-inch index card. The man reached to the back of his khakis, as if to fish out a wallet. “May I help you?” said the young woman behind the counter, smiling. Standing patiently by the velvet ropes, the man looked at his wristwatch. The morning of May 26, 2000, was quiet inside the LaSalle Bank in suburban Highland Park. The man in the baseball cap and sunglasses waited for the teller to notice him. This article is published in partnership with Epic Magazine. |
